Title: Saranormal: Haunted Memories
Author: Phoebe Rivers
Genre/Audience: Paranormal, mystery, middle grade
Publication: Simon Spotlight, 2012
Summary: This is the second in a middle grade series about Sara, a 12 year old girl who hears and sees ghosts. Sara has just finally started making friends after a big move with her dad, and she doesn’t want to seem anything but normal, so she continues keeping her secret from everyone. She’s also met a new boy, Jayden, who she’s starting to really like. There’s a mysterious ghost that always stands around him though, pushing Sara away. Can she figure out who the ghost is and why he doesn’t want Sara getting too close? Or can she figure out who signed her up to run for the middle school’s Harvest Queen, even though she has no desire to run? Follow Sara as she figures out all new mysteries in this addition to the Saranormal series!
My Thoughts: I feel much the same about this installment in the Saranormal series as I did about the first one, Ghost Town (my review can be read here). It was very cute, and just what I was looking for: a fun, light, middle grade read. I liked the spooky factor, and the building suspense and drama. I think middle grade readers (whom this story is intended for) will be on the edge of their seats for much of this story. I liked that this book continued with the same cast of characters, and that I got to know them more. I also liked the addition of some new friends, and a love interest for Sara. It has themes of fitting in, friendship, jealousy, and first crushes. An ideal read for middle grade students who are seeking a fun read with a little bit of creep factor, I would recommend this series. Please note, my rating is based on my own personal enjoyment of this story – fun, cute, but not mind-blowing – however, I do believe it would be a huge hit with the younger crowd! I will be continuing on with this series when I am in the mood for a quick read.
My Rating: 3/5
