Ever want to get a glimpse into the world of publishing? As a librarian, book blogger, and all around book lover, I’ve always wanted to know what it’s REALLY like to work in publishing. The Publicist offers a rare glimpse into that world, wrapped in a juicy story!
Kate Mitchell is a respected publicist at a big name publishing house in New York. She is good at what she does, and seems to love her job (most days), despite the middle of the night phone calls from frantic authors and daily office drama. When her authors get bad reviews and go crazy, she takes it all in stride. Enter Mac, ridiculously handsome and charming big-shot editor. He wants Kate, and she thinks she wants him too, but there’s that little problem of him being married, so really, what’s a girl to do? Step into the sometimes fun but ALWAYS hectic life of The Publicist.
I thought this book was just straight up FUN! Drama abounds at every turn and I was pulled in right from the opening sequence when an emotionally distraught author threatens to jump off a building and Kate saves the day. I really enjoyed seeing publishing from an insider’s view and realizing just how much work is done day in and day out in the world of books. I also loved the setting as I will pretty much devour any book set in NYC, my dream city! There were lots of interesting characters from Mac, the dreamy editor, to Allan, an author who Kate’s team has been waiting 20+ years for to write a second book. I will say that while I did like Kate a lot, she felt slightly flat to me and I would have liked to know more about her and see her developed better. I’m hoping to see more of this in book two, which I am anxious to read! Anyway, this book just has a lot of drama and excitement. I think it will really appeal to book lovers who, like me, want to know more about the inner workings of a publishing house and have fun while doing so. I definitely recommend this one!
