Stubborn, silly, strong-willed child of mine.
You know what you want, and you know how to get it. You push me to my limits and back again with your determination and grit. You dig your heels in and refuse to move until what you want is within your grasp. It slows you now, but in the future, it will propel you.
Today, you refuse to talk much beyond a few words, though I know the wheels are turning in your brain. You walked late, and ran late, but boy — how you fly now! Things come slower to you, it seems, because your strong will makes it so. You don’t want to do something? Fine, you ain’t gonna do it ’til you do it and not a minute sooner. I’ve come to accept that. Come to accept that most everyone else’s kid is saying what they want in words, while you merely use your pointer finger.
And my, what a finger it is! Teeny tiny but so demanding. You point this way and that, up and down and into the fridge, and the crib, and the closet. Like a king on his throne, you direct us, and while we try to fight it, you nearly always get you want eventually. It’s that strong-willed thing. It’s that “I can cry for an hour and won’t even stop to flinch” thing. It’s that “I will point and stomp and shout” thing. It’s that “you” thing, that I both can’t stand and love more than words – that stubborn beyond belief thing. That exasperate your mom and dad thing. That bring us to the brink of madness thing. That make us laugh and make us crazy thing.
Maybe it slows you now, but soon you’ll be moving at the speed of light. Soon, you will chase everything you’ve ever wanted because of that strong will thing. Soon, you will work until you get it right, because of that strong will thing. Soon, you will move mountains and walk on water, if you wanted to… because of that strong will thing.
Little boy of mine… you are stronger than you look, smarter than anyone gives you credit for, and determined above all else. One day, you can (and will) do anything you’ve ever wanted because of it. I know you will. And I’ll be cheering you on.
